Togo is among 14 countries selected for a new rice programme. The project was launched in Bouake, Cote d’Ivoire. It is supported by the African Development Bank, AfricaRice and ECOWAS. The five-year programme has funding of 8.5 million dollars. It aims to improve rice production and reduce imports in the region.
Farmers will receive better seed varieties and improved processing support. Officials hope yields will rise from about 2.5 tonnes to nearly 7 tonnes per hectare. In Togo, where rice imports remain high, authorities expect the plan to boost incomes and create jobs.
