The new division will handle corruption, galamsey, organised crime, narcotics, and cybersecurity cases. It was established under Section 14(3) of the Courts Act, 1993 (Act 459). Court offices will now operate from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm on weekdays to reduce delays. New Rules of Court and technological upgrades are expected to take effect by March 2026.
Judicial Service of Ghana says new special courts will help deliver faster and fairer justice. Judicial Secretary Musah Ahmed explained that the reform is based on the idea of specialisation. He compared it to the economic concept of division of labour to improve efficiency. The move follows Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie’s creation of a Specialised High Court Division.
