Voters in Ayawaso East are heading to the polls today to elect a new Member of Parliament. The by-election follows the death of the former MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January 2026. More than 40,000 registered voters are expected to take part in the exercise. The New Patriotic Party has presented Baba Ali as its candidate. The National Democratic Congress is fielding Baba Jamal, a former High Commissioner to Nigeria.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana says it has completed all preparations for a smooth process. Officials have warned against vote-buying and other electoral offences. The winner will be decided under Ghana’s first-past-the-post system, where the candidate with the highest votes wins.
