The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority, Abraham Amaliba, says a new road rule will require drivers to arrange towing within 30 minutes if their vehicle breaks down in a city centre. The rule will come with the Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill, 2025. Under the policy, every vehicle owner must subscribe to a towing service. Drivers may register with a towing company or through their insurance provider. The rule aims to reduce traffic congestion and road hazards caused by broken vehicles.
The National Insurance Commission says many insurance companies are preparing to offer towing services. The amendment will also update the Road Traffic Act, 2004 (Act 683) with new safety rules. After approval by John Dramani Mahama, the law will also legalise commercial motorcycle transport, widely known as the Okada system.
