The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) recovered GH¢4.39 million in 2025 from illegal connections in the Ashanti West Region. The amount forms part of GH¢5.81 million in surcharges issued during the year. The illegal usage covered over 3 million kilowatt-hours of electricity. ECG says power theft reduces revenue needed to pay GRIDCO, VRA and other suppliers. The company inspected more than 8,000 customers in areas like Bantama and Denkyemuoso.
Offences included meter bypass, direct connections and meter tampering. Officials warned that illegal connections can cause fires, electrocution and power outages. ECG says monitoring will increase as some offenders are now using fake meters to avoid payment.
