The government of Ghana has approved a new nationwide SIM card registration exercise. The announcement was made by the Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George. He said the previous registration process had problems such as weak biometric checks and cases of fraud. The new exercise will be a complete reset rather than a continuation of the old system. The National Communications Authority will keep the central database of SIM registration records. Biometric verification will also be mandatory for all users.
A Central Equipment Identity Register will help block stolen or fraud-linked mobile phones across networks. The government is also preparing a new law to regulate the process and improve security.
