Ghana Power Demand Rising Fast

The Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Dr. Shaffic Suleman, says Ghana’s electricity consumption is growing faster than expected. In his recent interview, he explained that demand has gone beyond the projected 8% annual growth rate.

According to him, the country is now using more power than official forecasts predicted. He attributed the surge to improved electricity supply stability and increased economic confidence. Dr. Suleman noted that suppressed demand is reducing as more consumers and businesses connect to the grid. He added that discussions around the proposed 24-hour economy policy could further increase electricity demand.

To address this, he said John Mahama and Energy Minister John Jinapor are working to expand generation capacity. Although supply remains stable for now, he stressed the need to quickly add more power capacity, especially between 2027 and 2029.
