John Dramani Mahama has officially cut sod for a new airport project at Nsoatre in the Bono Region. The project, announced during his Resetting Ghana Tour, marks a major step in improving regional air transport. It is intended to replace the existing Sunyani Airport, which has long faced operational limitations. According to the President, the airport’s 1.5-kilometre runway is too short to accommodate larger commercial aircraft. He also noted that surrounding developments have made any expansion of the current facility impractical.
To resolve this, the government secured a new and more suitable site with the support of traditional authorities. The new airport will feature a 2.4-kilometre runway designed to handle bigger aircraft and improve connectivity. The project is expected to boost economic activity, enhance trade, and position the Bono Region as a key investment hub.
