The National Assembly of Togo has approved a bill extending the state of security emergency in the Savanes region. The measure, first introduced in June 2022, will be renewed for 12 months starting March 13, 2026.
The vote took place in the presence of Economy Minister Badanam Patoki and Security Minister Calixte Batossie Madjoulba. Authorities say the extension responds to ongoing terrorist threats along Togo’s northern borders. According to the government, the legal framework will strengthen the operational capacity of the Defense and Security Forces while enhancing civilian protection. Officials also stressed the economic importance of stability in the Savanes region, a key trade corridor for regional transit.
Territorial Administration Minister Hodabalo Awaté assured that the emergency powers would be exercised in strict respect of the rule of law. The bill will now be forwarded to the Senate for further review before final adoption.
