The Nigeria Democratic Congress has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria at its maiden convention in Abuja.
The decision clears the way for former Anambra Governor Peter Obi to emerge as the party’s candidate on a single four-year tenure arrangement.
The motion was moved by Rep. Afam Ogene and received unanimous support from delegates.
Former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso described the zoning formula as a bold step toward fairness and national inclusion.
Former Bayelsa Governor Seriake Dickson accused the ruling establishment of weakening democratic space.
Peter Obi told delegates the NDC coalition was driven by principle and a desire to rescue Nigeria from insecurity and poverty.
He warned against the emergence of a one-party state and pledged to build a production-based economy.
APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda dismissed the NDC as no threat to the ruling party.
Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma also downplayed the coalition’s chances ahead of the 2027 elections.
Yilwatda noted that the APC currently controls 31 governors and over 400 lawmakers nationwide.
