Togo’s authorities have started consultations to create a national agricultural insurance project. A first meeting was held in Lomé with farmers, insurers, and technical partners. The goal is to gather opinions and suggestions to design a system suited to Togo’s needs.
The project aims to protect farmers from climate and economic shocks. It also seeks to boost resilience and encourage investment in agriculture. Agricultural insurance is seen as a tool for change and smarter risk management. Togo is receiving support from Bioversity International & CIAT and the Global Center on Adaptation. For the 2023-2024 season, the government secured $1 million for sovereign insurance, partly funded by the African Development Bank.
