Togo Opens Diplomatic Year with New Focus

Togo launched its new diplomatic year on September 3 in Lomé. Foreign Minister Robert Dussey urged Africa to pursue strategic autonomy in world affairs.

He stressed that the continent must define its relations on its own terms amid global rivalries. The event’s keynote speaker, ex-Chadian FM Abderaman Koulamallah, said Africa is now central to global interests. He highlighted youth demands for sovereignty and new players like Turkey, India, and Brazil investing in resources.

Koulamallah also urged African nations to devote 5% of GDP to education and 1% to research. Meanwhile, Togo validated a roadmap for economic diplomacy in July. The plan seeks to align diplomacy with national development and attract investment.
