African Youth Movements Demand Economic Justice

Dr. Chukwuemeka Eze, Director of the Open Society Foundations, says African youth movements are now united by one call: economic justice. He explained on Joy News’ PM Express that these movements have spread from cities into rural and peri-urban communities.

According to him, young people are no longer mainly focused on election disputes or fraud. Instead, they are demanding policies that make democracy deliver real benefits to citizens. Dr. Eze stressed that this trend is the same in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Senegal. He described the movements as both intersectional and intergenerational, involving a wide range of groups.

The push for economic justice, he said, shows a deep shift in Africa’s democratic struggles. He added that this new reality has shaped his foundation’s Africa strategy to link democracy with economic fairness.
