Togo has once again postponed the first meetings of its newly elected municipal councils. The sessions, originally set for September 17–19, were to elect mayors and their deputies.
The announcement was made on September 16 by Minister Hodabalo Awate in an official note. No reasons were given for the postponement. This is the third delay, after earlier dates of September 2–4 and 10–12 were also shifted. The elections are mandated by Article 123 of the decentralization law.
A new date will be announced later by the authorities. Meanwhile, outgoing mayors will continue handling day-to-day municipal affairs.
