Ghana Marks Founder’s Day

Ghanaians observed Founder’s Day on Sunday, September 21, to honour Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the nation’s first President.

The holiday was confirmed in a statement by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak on behalf of President John Mahama. The day has long carried controversy over whether Nkrumah alone or the “Big Six” should be credited as founders. Founder’s Day was first declared a statutory holiday in 2009 by President John Atta Mills. In 2017, President Akufo-Addo proposed August 4 as Founders’ Day, shifting September 21 to Nkrumah Memorial Day.

This year’s celebration fell on a Sunday, meaning the following Monday was declared a public holiday. The Western Nzema Youth League praised the government for restoring the day to Nkrumah’s birthday. They said the move rightly honours his legacy as a Pan-Africanist and Ghana’s independence leader.
