A call has been made for Ghana to declare February 4 as National Fugu Day. The proposal follows President John Mahama’s visit to Zambia on February 4, 2026, where he wore a traditional smock.
Some people in Zambia reportedly laughed at the outfit, misunderstanding its cultural meaning. The smock, also known as fugu or batakari, is a respected symbol of tradition and leadership in northern Ghana. It gained national prominence when Dr Kwame Nkrumah wore it at Ghana’s independence in 1957. Some Ghanaians believe that a national day would help educate people about its history and significance.
It would also promote local weavers, designers, and cultural tourism. Supporters say the day could turn misunderstanding into pride and strengthen Ghana’s cultural identity.
