Ghana Owes UK PhD Students £5m

Ghana owes about £5 million in unpaid stipends and tuition to PhD students in the UK. The disclosure was made by High Commissioner Sabah Zita Benson. She explained that many affected students have already completed their studies. However, they still demand payments based on promises in their award letters. Some students reportedly finished as far back as 2023 but remain in the UK seeking payment.

The issue has caused tension, including threats of protest by some students. Interestingly, several of them are already working, including teaching in universities. The High Commissioner says stricter scholarship rules may require such beneficiaries to refund funds if they stay abroad.
