School Gardens to Boost Nutrition in Togo

In Togo, the agricultural project ProMIFA is helping improve nutrition in school canteens. The initiative targets vulnerable communities in the Savanes Region and Kara Region. Ten public primary schools have received land to develop school gardens. These gardens will produce vegetables to support meals served in school canteens. The gardens will include fencing, irrigation systems and other basic farming facilities. Students will also learn gardening and organic farming practices.

Technical guidance will come from Institute for Consulting and Technical Support (ICAT). The program adds to a national school feeding effort that served over 22 million meals to more than 218,000 pupils in recent years.
