Togolese Jurist Wins Prestigious JB Scott Prize

Togolese academic Mawuto Tossa has become the first African to win the JB Scott Prize from the Institute of International Law. He received the award in August 2025 for his manuscript on African regionalism in international investment law.

Tossa holds doctorates from the University of Lomé and the University of Granada in Spain. His work examines Africa’s shift from sub-regional approaches to a continental framework, especially under the AfCFTA. The jury described his study as “relevant and bold”, offering new ideas for investment governance in Africa. Tossa is a specialist in international economic law and has previously won several international distinctions.

These include the Africa Arbitration Academy Prize, the David Caron Fellowship, and the Coimbra Group Young African Scholar program. The JB Scott Prize, created in 1931, honors outstanding research in international law and is awarded every two years.
