The 9th Pan-African Congress will finally be held in Lomé, Togo, from December 8 to 12. The announcement came last week from Togo’s Foreign Minister, Robert Dussey. The gathering will bring together African leaders, politicians, academics, civil society, and diaspora representatives.
Discussions will focus on reviving Pan-Africanism and reforming global institutions to better represent Africa. Dussey noted the gap between the African Union’s call for diaspora involvement and the neglect many people of African descent feel.
The congress will also stress Africa’s need for fairer participation in world governance. Taking place eight years after the last edition in Accra, the Lomé meeting is expected to mark a turning point. The diaspora is expected to play a key role in building stronger African solidarity.
