Government Explains Power Disruptions

Government spokesperson Amadou Coulibaly has clarified the recent electricity supply disruptions in the country. He spoke after a Council of Ministers meeting held on April 1, 2026, in Abidjan under President Alassane Ouattara. According to him, about 80% of the outages are caused by overused power cables and overloaded transformers. These challenges have led to voltage drops in several neighborhoods. In response, the government has launched a short-term emergency program costing 32 billion CFA francs.

He said this plan should resolve the issue in the Abidjan district within a few weeks. For the long term, authorities are focusing on a nationwide rehabilitation of the electricity distribution network. Officials also noted that a 14% rise in electricity demand, driven by intense heat, has further strained the system.
