Power Cuts Linked to Upgrades

John Dramani Mahama says recent outages are not “dumsor” but part of system upgrades. He explained that the cuts are needed to improve power quality and stability. Government has procured about 2,500 transformers to replace old ones nationwide. Many existing transformers are outdated and cannot meet growing demand. Mahama noted that Ghana’s population growth has increased pressure on electricity supply.

The project is being carried out by Electricity Company of Ghana and Northern Electricity Distribution Company. Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor said installations have begun across the country. Officials assured that communities will be informed before planned outages and asked for patience.
