The Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG) has warned that delays at the Tema Port could lead to revenue losses for the state. The association says some importers are considering diverting cargo to the Lomé Port in Togo.
FABAG notes that the situation is already disrupting the supply of key food items such as rice and sugar. According to the association, the delays are caused by a strike by unskilled labourers who offload bulk and bagged goods. Temporary workers have been engaged, but offloading capacity has fallen sharply. Current output stands at about 200 metric tonnes per day, compared to the normal minimum of 2,000.
The slowdown has resulted in longer clearance times and rising demurrage charges for importers. FABAG has called for urgent dialogue to resolve the dispute and restore efficient port operations
